Team Trophy – Summer 2011

Austin Abel

Austin is 21 years old from Hickory, North Carolina where he has been skiing since childhood and specializes in slalom, but is a fantastic 3 event instructor. Austin has been at Trophy Lakes for five years and has proved to be a top level instructor.  Austin achieved his Open Rating in October 2009 and has been traveling the world hosting clinics and competing in various competitions.  He has an uncanny ability to learn and apply his experiences not only into his own skiing, but also into his coaching, making him one of the co-founders of Trophy’s patented Hybrid Style of skiing and coaching.  Austin is one of the hardest working skiers you’ll ever meet, both on and off the water.  He has dedicated his life to this sport, and it will surely pay huge dividends for him in the very near future.  Be sure to keep your eye on him.

Personal Best:  3 @ 41 off (practice)    2 @ 41 off (tournament)

Austin is currently Sponsored by:

Razor Skis . Dolphin Wetsuits . 4wake.com . Carolina Watersports . RydeOn Sports . Trophy Lakes

Matt DuBon

9730_150494322912_513257912_2661224_2163112_nMatt grew-up skiing on the St. Lawrence River on the border of upstate NY and Canada behind a 13″ Boston Whaler.  This atmosphere is what drew him into watersports.  So much so, that he has dedicated his life to just that.

Matt has been working at Trophy Lakes for the past 6 years.  Having started out as the Grounds & Maintenance Manager, Matt has had his hands in virtually every aspect of the Trophy Lakes Watersports Center.  Today he is the General Manager and handles everything you’d expect of someone with the title “Head of Operations”.  Marketing, Event Coordinations, Staff, Grounds & Maintenance, you name it.

Having spent a great deal of time listening and absorbing slalom techniques and theories from various skiers/instructors, Matt has developed his own Hybrid Style of skiing and more importantly coaching. His simplified instruction breaks it down into a way that is not only simple to understand, but easy to apply for skiers of all levels.

“This sport can be so simple and fundamental…why over-complicate it?”

Drew DuBon

drew bio picDrew DuBon is 23 years old and grew up in Somerville, NJ.  After learning to ski as a child on the St. Lawrence River in upstate NY where he’s spent 20 consecutive summers, he’s now completing his studies at Clemson University, he’ll graduate this May with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

This year will mark Drew’s 4rd year at Trophy Lakes

Ricky Walters

Ricky Walters is 29 years old and grew up in Augusta, Georgia where he learned how to ski in Clarkes Hill Lake as a child.  Ricky graduated from Georgia Southern University with a degree in Manufacturing Engineering while skiing for GSUs waterski team.

This is Ricky’s second year working at Trophy Lakes, and he will taking on the role of Ski School Manager. He’s already begun making remarkable improvements since given his new position and we hope he’ll help to usher in a new era of the famed Trophy Lakes Waterski school.

Ricky’s fun loving attitude and quirky southern humor keep the scene at Trophy fresh day after day.  You’re sure to see a smile on his face whether skiing @ 38 off, flipping and sliding on a wakeboard or ski jumping 100+ feet.

Hayden Edwards

hayden bio picHayden Edwards is 20 years old and is from Austin, Texas where she learned to ski on Lake McQueeney at age 8 and fell in love with slalom skiing. Hayden attends and skis for the College of Charleston and is working towards a degree in Spanish. This is her second year here at Trophy Lakes.

This summer, Hayden will be taking on the responsibilities of the Trophy Lakes Pro Shop Manager.  Hayden has been a huge asset to our operation, always working with a smile on her face and a natural motivation to improve.  Don’t be fooled by the title though, you’re sure to see her in the boat quite often as Hayden has proven to be an excellent boat driver and instructor.

my heart has found it’s new home!? i am a former semi-professional water skiier turned aquatic therapist. i have been off the water for a couple of years but would love to get back on! i am new to charleston but not new to water skiing. i am a former member of cypress garden’s traveling ski show team…us water ski show team/tampa bay water ski team and george’s ski and social club. we have a world record for building the largest skiing pyramid and some jump and barefoot records as well. all that said, i have not found my niche in charleston and am looking to use water skiing for sport and for healing! i’m wondering if u might have a career opportunity for me..to teach, to help, to ski!!!!
hope to here from u soon…i just heard about u from a new friend on folly beach!!! so excited to see ur site!
    thanx so much,
